Photos of Life Above the Arctic Circle

A memorial in Murmansk commemorating the volunteers that rebuilt the city after heavy bombing.

After Murmansk was almost completely burned down during Hitler's heavy attacks in World War II, the city was rebuilt by volunteers. This memorial stands to honor them today.

It stands at the spot where ranks of volunteers would form before starting work. They were completely responsible for rebuilding the city. The three steel spokes at the top symbolize their unshakeable strength and determination.
